August 2009

Dear friends!

Welcome to the French Circle for the 2009–2010 season! I have great pleasure in inviting you to join us in our exploration of the delights of the French language.

As always, we have a varied programme ahead of us. The talks cover many different themes – with perhaps a slight emphasis this year on aspects of French history and language, in response to members' comments on the questionnaire they filled in towards the end of last season. Some of our 'old hands' will be back to talk to us again this year, along with other speakers whom we haven't seen for some years, and still others will be making their Bristol début. We looking forward to seeing them all over the coming weeks.

We have kept some of the fixed points of the programme, such as the book discussion and the conversation evenings, and we look forward to a second session of Morceaux choisis – a very pleasant evening during which members present favourite poems, texts and music. Start thinking about what you might like to entertain us with!

I would like to thank Kay and David Norris, who for the second summer running were kind enough to hold open house for French Circle members for another series of conversation evenings, which were much appreciated by all those who were able to take part. We are very grateful to them!

This year I will continue to give a 'petit cours' before most of our talks and activities – they are indicated on the programme by an * next to the date. These lighthearted 'petits cours' start at 7pm and are for anyone who wants to widen their vocabulary and work on French pronunciation and idioms. Everyone is welcome!

If you have never been to the Circle and are hesitating about whether you would like to come along or not, please don't worry – just come along! You will be most welcome.

If you have internet access, you will find all the information about the French Circle, in English and French, at www.cfbristol.org.uk.

On behalf of the committee of the French Circle, I send you best wishes and hope to see you soon at one of our meetings.
